B-Roll Packages/Photo of Ceremony Focused on Local Fire Fighter and Family Available

Call Kurt Detrick to arrange

On Site Media must be in place by 10:30 a.m.

Ben Fuller joined the fire service with a commitment to put his life on the line to keep Portsmouth Virginia safe. Now his name has been added to the International Association of Fire Fighters Fallen Fire Fighter Wall of Honor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to commemorate those who have died in the line of duty.

Fire Fighter details: Fire Fighter Joseph B. Fuller  lost his life on December 9, 2017 in service to our community due to occupational brain cancer. His daughter Lauren will join fire fighters from across the United States and Canada in Colorado for the ceremony.

"The names etched on the granite walls tell a bigger story, one of a century of sacrifice and a fire service that has given so much to keep families, businesses and communities safe," said Kurt Detrick, President of the Portsmouth Professional Firefighters & Paramedics IAFF Local 539. The memorial includes those who died on the fire ground and the alarming number who succumbed to occupation illnesses such as cancer heart disease and post-traumatic stress.

We can help you tell this story. Video and photos of the service can be made available. Visit the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial web site for a list of names on the Wall of Honor and other information.

This shows the minimum number of firefighters needed to respond to a residential house fire. More firefighters and Paramedics are needed for larger buildings such as schools, shopping malls, apartment buildings, and high rise buildings.

5-10-17

Brothers and Sisters,

Last night at the City Council meeting there was a vote by the Council to reclassify our full-time Paramedics as Public Safety Employees, and cover them under the Virginia Line of Duty Act. This change now gives our Paramedics benefits under the LODA bill in the event that they are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty. This has been a long fight to get this done, and many people have worked very hard to get this passed. The Executive Board and Membership of Local 539 would like to thank ALL members of the Portsmouth City Council for voting yes, as well as our City Manager and Human Recourses Director for helping to making this happen.

Thank you,
Local 539 Executive Board

Congratulations to our new Mayor, John Rowe. And City Council Members, Lisa Lucas-Burke, Elizabeth Psimas, and Nathan Clark.

Now we can start putting the safety of the citizens and firefighters back to the top priority that it is.

A Look At NFPA 1710

Why was the NFPA 1710 Standard created?
The mission of the NFPA is “to improve the methods of fire protection and prevention” and
to establish “proper safeguards against loss of life and property” due to fire. While the
organization and deployment of fire and rescue services is potentially the most important
factor in safeguarding against the loss of life and property due to fire, the NFPA had never
previously issued a standard that set forth comprehensive minimum criteria to ensure safe
and effective fire and emergency medical response by career fire departments. The NFPA
1710 Standard was created to meet the overwhelming need for just such a standard. It
represents the culmination of more than a decade of work by the NFPA Standards Council,
its Technical Committees and its membership. The result is a comprehensive, uniform and
practical standard governing fire and rescue service deployment by career fire departments
throughout North America.
